Insulin is a pancreatic hormone that nourishes the tissues by lowering blood sugar. In order for insulin to perform its functions, it must be sensitive to insulin receptors. When it is insensitive, insulin cannot affect the cell sufficiently. When it is sensitive, it helps the cells to take glucose. It plays an important role in the conversion of excess glucose into glycogen. After the glycogen stores are filled, they are stored as fat. This process is called de novo lipogenesis. Also, de novo lipogenesis contributes to the formation of insulin resistance. Therefore, insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes is more common in obese and overweight people.
